Tallinn, Estonia

We arrived this morning at 10:30 and headed off the ship.

We originally had purchased tickets to see a couple of lighthouses but that trip was cancelled due to not enough people signing up for the trip. What's wrong with you people, don't you know lighthouses are cool?  Oh well, we had a great day exploring Tallinn.

The water was so smooth that the wake from the ship was really neat.

The line for the shuttle was ridiculously long and we decided to take a cab. Great idea.

Dome Church (St. Mary's Cathedral)

The church was so different inside than any other church we've seen. All these 'coat-of-arms' looking things hung on the walls. It was dark and sort of medieval looking.

There were stairs to climb up to the bell tower and of course we had to do that. They were steep and not very even, but up we went. I believe there were 120 steps.

The views were fantastic.
On the left Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and on the right Tall Herman

Both these are of the Dome Church.

On the way b

ack down the steps we heard the pipe organ playing in the church. We hurried as fast as we could considering the stairs were somewhat difficult to maneuver.

I have posted the video of the pipe organ on FB, but here is a picture of the pipes and other areas of the church.

We really loved the pipe organ and enjoyed the church.

We continued around to the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral which is a Russian Orthodox church. They were holding a funeral inside and we had to be quiet. I wouldn't have wanted people watching me while having a funeral service.

I was only able to take two pictures inside before I was given a dirty look by a young man in a robe.
Oh well!

Very beautiful and in the same style as 17th Century Russian churches.

I didn't find anything else about this structure, just what the picture says.

I love lilacs and there were many trees in Tallinn so I stopped by to smell some.

This is the War of Independence Monument.

In this square there were several stone carvings.

The Church of Saint Nicholas

This is the Town Hall Building in Town Hall Square

On the side of the Town Hall Building was his Dragon, they call it in the tour book "a decorative detail on the facade".  I thought it was so funny.

Another view of Town Hall Square.

Jim in a doorway.

So sad to what bombing can do to a city.

This is a section of the old wall and a picture looking straight up the wall.

The old city gate, Viru Gates.

We walked down this narrow street and saw these interesting arched passageways, this is called St. Catherine's Passage.

There are defensive structures in Old Town. Each tower was different and they were named from parts of the Swedish Kingdom. This particular one is called Stout Margaret Tower or Fat Margaret Tower. I get it!

There were three ships docked in the port today. Ours was the biggest.

Our ship.

You could take a Balloon ride, which was tethered to a large wheel to wheel in up and down.

It was good to see the ship. Our legs were tired.

Tomorrow is St. Petersburg, Russia for a day and a half. We've got a two-day tour planned and were very much looking forward to this port. We have to get up early to go through Russian Immigration Inspection. I'll report about it tomorrow.
