Last day in France

Well I'm going to catch up today on the blog so look for more.

Our day started out great with our last breakfast at the Chateau and packing up and leaving. It was sad, Jeffrey was so kind and helpful and we really loved staying there. Very peaceful and loved sleeping with the windows open each night and waking to the birds singing. Jim loved playing with Julia and I know she'll miss him.

Bayeux was such a nice little town and we found a church we wanted to explore. The church was Cathedrale Notre-Dame with really beautiful windows.

Beautiful interior and the stained glass windows were exceptionally beautiful.

Jim on the stairs down to the crypt.

They had lovely remembrances of WWII

And Operation Overlord.

Beautiful organ pipes.

It was a beautiful church and we really enjoyed it.

Out behind the church was a tree that was planted in 1797. One very old tree!

Another view of the church.

We stopped by this cute little antique shop and saw some cool things.

Old hats from the war.

Larry, this one is for you!!

Next we went to The Bayeux Tapestry.

The Tapestry is the tale of the conquest of England by William, Duke of Normandy, depicted in a 70 meter long embroidery. It is remarkably well preserved for a work that is about 1000 years old.

There is an audio guided tour telling the story.

This is an example of the stitch used in the Tapestry.

Then it was time to head to the Ferry across the English Channel. We had tickets for reclining chairs in the front of the boat. We drove right onto the boat and got out of our car and headed to find our chairs.

This is a picture of the ramp we drove onto the ship.

A picture of the places where the ferries cross the channel.

Jim and I outside on the back of the ferry.

It was a bigger boat that any of us thought and was a smaller version of a cruise ship. The crossing took about five hours and to help pass the time they were showing a couple of movies. We were the only ones in the theater and we watched  My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2. It was great and we laughed and laughed.

When the boat docked we drove off and went through border and passport control. We drove to our hotel, which was about 30 minutes away. When we got to the Hilton, Bob went to check in and we unloaded our luggage and Jim (and I have a lot of luggage because of our extended trip). The hotel was having computer problems, among other things. While we were standing there several people came up to the front desk to complain about several different things.

Well during the computer problems... they lost our room. There was only one room available and it had two twin beds. Well... we waited and talked and they couldn't figure it out. They couldn't find the other room and short of going door to door there was no way to find out. On top of that the Queen Mary 2, the Queen Victoria and the Queen Elizabeth were all in port at the same time and there were no rooms anywhere!!

The only rooms available anywhere was another Hilton over 30 minutes away. So we loaded up the car AGAIN and drove for another 30 minutes. Now the part I haven't mentioned yet was the fact that it was 10:30 at night. We finally got to the hotel, it was late and it was a nasty hotel. Old, old, old and did I say old?

It was a bed with clean sheets and we dropped into it knowing that tomorrow we were boarding the ship and sailing away.

That was the end of a very long and tiring day.
