I've seen pictures of this fabulous island but didn't realize how large it really was. It's located 600 meters from land and is accessible during low tide. The tides can vary greatly at about 46 meters between high and low tides. We arrived just after high tide and some water was still going out as we walked from the parking lot to the Abbey by way of the new bridge which opened in 2014.
As we got closer and closer it got larger and larger. It's 247 acres in size.
You can still see some water around the island and by the time we left it was gone.
It is described as a magical island topped by a gravity-defying medieval monastery.
Florin, our guide, not realizing that I'm taking his picture.
The narrow streets in the village.
Then came the stairs.... stairs and more stairs.
Our selfie!
Now if you don't like walking on the bridge, you can always take a walk across the muck with a tour guide.... I think I'll pass.
Lots of pictures and not many words. There are no words.... it's an amazing place.
Sorry to be so late with posting this but we're back on the ship now and I should be able to keep up.
Love to all!
Wow, this place is beautiful! I LOVE seeing old places that have been preserved that have hundreds (if not thousands)of years of story to tell! Thanks for sharing! Tim
