We cruised into port and docked at 11:00 am. It was a beautiful day today - there was a lot to see.
We got off the ship and took a shuttle into town and headed to the Rosenborg Palace. This palace was built as a pleasure palace by Christian IV at the beginning of the 1600's and quickly became his favorite residence.
It's a beautiful palace and it's self-guided with lots of fascinating rooms.
It's a little hard to see but there is a glass room and is the only one of it's kind in the world. The collection was arranged this way n 1714 and remains this way today.
The great hall with three silver lions from 1670 and the king and queen's throne.
The lions are made of narwhal tusk and silver.
This was the china room and features china from China and Japan.
Both this room and the glass room were floor to ceiling with the glass and china and as you stepped into the room there was glass between you and the objects.
The picture is of a four year old Christian V and shows him with toy guns. The toy guns were preserved and are shown below the painting.
In the basement was a weapons and wine room. There were several categories of weapons like ceremonial, hunting, tournament and military. They were beautiful and some with jewels on the handles.
These wine casks once held Rosenborg wine from the 1590's.
These beautiful ivory carvings are just a small sample of the intricate work shown in the castle.
This is the riding gear from Christian's wedding in 1634. Beautiful embroidered with gold and pearls.
Then we stepped into the Treasury which was filled with the Crown Jewels and other pieces.
Christian III's sword from 1551 which is still used in coronations.
This is Christian IV's crown from 1596.
These two crowns are from 1671 and 1731.
It was a wonderful palace and it was so nice to be able to walk through at our own pace and look at the things we wanted to see and pass by those that were not as interesting.
The beautiful canals.
There were many different and beautiful spires in Copenhagen.
We stopped for some lunch and then got on a Hop on - Hop off bus for a ride around the city.
We caught the shuttle back to the ship and then took a walk to find the Little Mermaid.
We walked back to the ship, hot and tired. We had some dinner and then back to our room to shower and relax.
It has been unusually warm in most of the ports since Iceland. We brought many cold weather clothes and not too many warm weather clothes and so we're having to get what we have washed more often. The temperature today was about 75 degrees and the people of Copenhagen are not used to this and, of course, have no air conditioners.
As we've gotten toward the end of this trip we've skipped the shows and nightlife on the ship and just retreated to our cabin to rest. We're tired but happy, This is our last port and now we have two sea days before we dock in Southampton, England, and while we're not done quite yet this has been a fabulous trip, the trip of a lifetime.
We leave port at midnight as we head back to Southampton.
Goodnight!
